How This Affects You
Right now, the airports, tunnels, ports and bridges you use every day, the building you work in, the business you own, the power plants and transmission lines you depend on, and the theatres and sports arenas you visit are probably not insured against a terrorist attack.
Without the protection of terrorism insurance, a growing number of businesses and workers are left uncovered against a potentially catastrophic loss.
Business owners, who are forced to self-insure or pay exorbitant fees for limited, deficient and possibly defective coverage, face potentially crippling liability and property damage losses. As less money is available and risks are greater, investment in new construction and jobs will suffer. Lenders are no more willing to bear the risk for terrorism than the insurance companies are. And, since operating a business without adequate insurance in many cases is not feasible, some companies may be forced to cease or limit operations altogether until insurance is once again available.
The impact will ripple through the economy to employees, vendors, suppliers, contractors, construction workers and investors such as pension funds. Every business decision delayed or cancelled because of this lack of insurance means jobs lost or not createdconstruction jobs, building and trade jobs and others.
Every American could be affected. Unless the federal government intervenes, the lack of terrorism insurance could create havoc in the economy, threaten its recovery and pose a very real threat to our homeland security.
